How to Design a Professional Data Visualization Dashboard for Your Portfolio Using BI Tools

Task Summary

  • Objective:
Build a dashboard that demonstrates your data visualization, styling, and interactivity skills using a BI tool (such as Tableau).

  • Data:
Choose any topic you are passionate about and collect/find your own dataset. (Recommended sources: kaggle.com or data.world. You can use personal data as well.)

    • If you’re targeting a specific company/job, you can create a dashboard about them.

    • Be creative! The dashboard should motivate you to do your best work.

  • Communication:
Remember, your audience may not be familiar with your topic or dataset, so your visualizations must be clear, intuitive, and general enough for anyone to understand.

Dashboard Design Guidelines

  • Title:

    • Dashboard must have a title positioned in the top left.

  • Filters:

    • Filters updating the entire dashboard go in the top right.

    • Filters for specific charts should be by the chart, ideally to the right of the chart title.

  • Layout:

    • KPIs and most important info follow the title.

    • General overview charts come next.

    • Lower-level/detail charts should be at the bottom.

    • Elements should be aligned, with uniform borders and balanced spacing.

  • Styling:

    • Declutter (avoid unnecessary chart elements).

    • Use less color and be consistent throughout.

    • Don’t use too much text; label all important elements.

    • Highlight key points clearly.

    • Don’t switch chart types unnecessarily—consistency is better.

    • Avoid Tableau’s default colors; be artistic and creative.

    • Edit and revisit your dashboard multiple times; seek feedback.

  • Interactivity:

    • Include interactive features (e.g., filters, navigation buttons, tooltips).

    • Avoid large tables; focus on summaries.

    • Tooltips should be considered for all charts.

Submission Requirements

  • Files:

    • Submit your Tableau workbook (.twbx file).

    • Include a high-quality screenshot of your finished dashboard.

  • Grading Breakdown:

    • 10%: Interactivity

    • 50%: Meaningful data with clear, readable charts

    • 40%: Styling (color, layout, creativity, etc.)
