Introduction

Taking the ENGL 21002 course has been a transformative journey for me as a Dominican immigrant learning English. Throughout this semester, I have grown not only in my language skills but also as a writer and a thinker. Each class introduced new knowledge and challenges that pushed me to improve my writing and develop a deeper understanding of culture, identity, and communication. This essay reflects on my progress by discussing four key Course Learning Outcomes and how I engaged with them in my projects and learning process.

Course Learning Outcomes Reflected in My Work

1. Demonstrate linguistic and cultural diversity as a resource in writing.
In my peer-to-peer cultural op-ed and interview projects, I explored the richness of Dominican and Mexican cultures and how language shapes identity. For example, in my interview with Ashley, I highlighted how bilingualism and cultural traditions influence communication and belonging. This assignment helped me understand that my cultural background is not a barrier but a valuable resource that enriches my writing and perspectives.

2. Develop critical thinking through analysis and reflection.
Writing analytical pieces like my annotated bibliography and cultural op-ed forced me to think deeply about the connections between language, culture, and identity. I learned to incorporate secondary sources effectively to support my arguments and to revise drafts critically to improve clarity and engagement. This process strengthened my ability to analyze complex ideas and reflect on personal experiences.

3. Use research and sources responsibly in academic writing.
The annotated bibliography project was an essential experience in learning how to select, evaluate, and cite credible sources properly. By engaging with scholarly texts about gaming communities and cultural identity, I practiced synthesizing information and maintaining academic integrity, which is crucial for my future academic work.

4. Communicate ideas clearly and effectively in written English.
Throughout the semester, my writing became clearer, more organized, and persuasive. I improved my ability to structure essays, develop arguments, and use appropriate academic language. Feedback from peers and instructors was invaluable in helping me polish my drafts and express my ideas with confidence.

Reflection on My Writing Development and Relationship with AI

Before this course, writing in English was intimidating, but through consistent practice and assignments, I became more comfortable expressing myself. Each new project gave me the opportunity to build vocabulary, experiment with different writing styles, and learn from constructive criticism. Although the use of AI tools was not allowed in this self-assessment essay, my experience with technology and digital resources during the course helped me better understand how to enhance my writing process while maintaining authenticity.

Conclusion

ENGL 21002 has significantly contributed to my growth as a writer and as a learner. I have learned to appreciate my cultural heritage as a strength and to develop critical and analytical skills essential for academic success. Moving forward, I am motivated to continue improving my writing, confident that the tools and knowledge gained in this course will support my academic and personal goals.
